1797      Mission San Jose founded. First European settlement in area.

1800's   Mission Embarcadaro on Alameda Creek

1842     Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda granted to Jose de Jesus Vallejo

1844     Rancho Petrero de los Cerritos granted to Alviso & Pacheco

1846     "The Brooklyn" arrives bringing first settlers.

1851     "Union City" laid out by James Horner Built Store, Church, Blacksmith Shop, and Schoolhouse

1851      Steamer "Union" makes trips to Yerba Buena

1852     First Stage Line, Horner Stage, running between Mission San Jose and Union City

1853     First County Seat located in New Haven

1853     First Alvarado School

1854     Union City and New Haven combined to form Alvarado

1855     County Seat moved to San Leandro

1862     Quigley Salt Works. First salt production in area.

1862     St. Anne's Catholic Church built in Alvarado (Smith & Watkins)

1863     Alvarado Guards, State Militia, formed

1867     Western Pacific Railroad run through what is now Decoto

1868     Cosmopoliton School District founded (Decoto)

1868     Earthquake. Shop of A.J. Lattin of Alvarado destroyed.

1870     E. H. Dyer founds Alvarado Sugar Beet factory.

1870     Decoto founded as a railroad town

1877     Alvarado Post Office opened

1878     South Pacific Coast Railroad put through Alvarado

1880     Population of Alvarado - 400.

1883     Decoto Grammer School Built

1890     First County Court House Burns

1896     Masonic Home cornerstone laid

1898     Masonic Home dedicated

1902     Alvarado Bank formed. Names changes to Bank of Alvarado County then to Central Bank.

1905     Alvarado Fire Department Formed

1906     "Our Lady of the Rosary" (Decoto) Church Founded

1909     Western Pacific Railroad put through Decoto

1922     Western Pacific Depot in Decoto moved to San Jose

1924     2nd Alvarado Grammer School built

1925     Decoto Fire Department Formed

1929     2nd Decoto Grammer School built

1929     Alvarado "Pioneer" Newspaper Founded

1930's   Southern Pacific Station in Decoto Closed

1937     Pacific States Steel Founded

1941     Alvarado Sanitary District formed

1946     WWII Service Memorial Dedicated

1946     Alvarado "Pioneer" newspaper ends publication

1950     U.S. Pipe and Steel Factory built (then American Pipe Company)

1955     Central Pacific Station in Decoto torn down.

1959     Union City Incorporates

1959     Alvarado and Decoto Fire Departments merge into Union City Fire Department

1959     "Union City Leader" newspaper starts publication

1965     New Haven Unified School District formed

1966     Union City Police Dept. formed

1966     Union City Drive-In opened

1969     Alvarado Depot torn down

1972     BART Union City Station opens

1973     "Union City Leader" newspaper ends publication

1974     First Popular Vote Mayoral election

1974     First City-Wide Bus Service (The Flea) starts

1975     Holly Sugar beet sugar plant closed

1975     "Outlook" newspaper starts and stops publishing

1976     Civic Center Complex built (City Hall, Police, Library)

1977     Holly Sugar smoke stacks demolished

1977     Pacific States Steel closes

1985     First Gladiola Festival

1998     Union City Drive-In closed

1999     Union Landing Shopping Center opens
